At the recent meeting of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) Foreign Ministers held in Tripoli, Libya, Sierra Leone emerged as a proposed host for a regional Bank for Agriculture and Food Security.
The proposal, which will be formally considered by CEN-SAD’s Board later this year, aims to establish a financial institution dedicated to strengthening agricultural development across member states. If approved, the bank would be based in Sierra Leone and serve as a key driver for enhancing food production and improving food security in the region.
The initiative is expected to unlock new opportunities within Sierra Leone’s agricultural sector by increasing access to financing for farmers, agribusinesses, and related value chains. It also holds the potential to generate employment, particularly for young people, while boosting local production and reducing reliance on food imports.
Sierra Leone’s consideration for hosting the institution reflects growing confidence in the country’s role within regional cooperation frameworks and its commitment to advancing sustainable development through agriculture.
The final decision will be made following deliberations by the CEN-SAD Board in the coming months.
