Mandate of the Ministry

The mandate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is outlined in Section 10 of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, Act No. 6 of 1991, as follows:

Our Mission

To engage national and international stakeholders including Sierra Leoneans overseas for broad consensus in protecting and promoting national interests, including seeking the welfare of Sierra Leoneans abroad and promoting growth and opportunities as a country striving towards middle-income status and a competitive contributor on the global stage.

Our Vision

To build a strong, dynamic and professionally endowed Foreign Service capable of advancing the national interest and positioning Sierra Leone as an effective and credible partner in promoting peace, security, stability and development at the sub-regional, regional and global levels as well as seeking to protect the interests of Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad.

Functions

To guide Foreign Service Officers in the effective discharge of their responsibilities and in the implementation of this Strategic Plan, the following core functions of the Ministry are defined:

  1. Conduct and manage foreign relations;
  2. Safeguard national sovereignty and interests;
  3. Advance national development through diplomacy;
  4. Promote regional integration and multilateral engagements;
  5. Promote peace, security, and global cooperation;
  6. Advance human rights and good governance;
  7. Enhance national image and strategic communication;
  8. Strengthen diplomatic infrastructure and institutional capacity;
  9. Support Government’s initiatives on climate-related issues; and
  10. Support Presidential and high-level international engagements.

We are committed to being accountable and transparent through our work and in our relationship with everyone including our International Partners, bilateral institutions and friendly countries. We strive to explain our actions to those we work with and take responsibility irrespective of the outcome.

Engagement

Sierra Leoneans abroad will continuously be engaged in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policy options and programmes and to provide feedback and facilitate timely policy interventions
